Company History
Dean and Nanella Alexander began their venture into the popcorn world in 1979
at the time of then Lt. Col. Dean Alexander's retirement from the United States
Air Force. They purchased a gourmet popcorn franchise in a mall and over the
next several years bought and sold several retail locations. This allowed them
to plan a lifestyle allowing them to work together along with the three of
their five children still living at home.
Over the next several years they received a number of awards, including the
National Sales Award for 1980. Dean pursued the local businesses and developed
a large number of customers purchasing canisters for clients and associates.
Nan's artistic touches in personalizing canisters provided unique designs
available only through their store. Additional accounts came from some
pharmaceutical companies using the canisters for their customers.
Fundraising
In 1987, a new program was developed on a trial basis - fundraising. This
program grew from one small country school selling our products in San Antonio,
to over 1,000 customers statewide. The program was so successful that after
several years the retail stores were sold, allowing the company to focus all of
its attention on the fundraising and business gift programs.
Our Secret
One of the reasons for the popularity of the popcorn was due to the Alexander's
determination to purchase only the finest ingredients available. A special
"mushroom" popcorn is used, which produces a large round kernel. Regular
popcorn is called "butterfly" due to the small "wings" that break off during
the confection process. In the spring, sufficient popcorn is purchased for the
year, then shipped by truckloads to be stored in a cold storage facility until
needed. This allows the popcorn to retain its moisture and pop into the large
"mushroom" kernel. These innovative ideas and the determination to use only the
finest ingredients have caused the cornerstone of the business to become "Quality
Products & Extraordinary Customer Service."
Today, Deanan Products is still family-owned and family-run in the same
Converse, Texas factory in which a great idea "popped" into Dean and
Nanella's heads.
